Hancock Middle School robotics team awaits World Championship results
One middle school robotics team on the Coast would be gearing up for their world championship competition right now, but COVID-19 has caused a change of plans.
Hancock Middle School’s robotics team known as the Optimizers won all five tournaments they participated in this season and ranked 50th out of 4,652 teams worldwide.
While COVID resulted in the cancellation of the Vex Robotics Championship in Louisville, Kentucky, the Optimizers will still find out their world results in a YouTube Vex Virtual World Celebration on Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m.
Team Mentor Charles Bourg says he’s happy the teams are still getting recognition in light of the circumstances. “I’m glad they’re doing something to recognize the accomplishment that the teams had for the year. It’s a recognition. If you can’t be there in person, I think they really did the kids a service by giving them something to look forward too.”
Next year’s game for competition will be released as a part of the virtual event as well. The Optimizers compete in the Vex Middle School IQ Program.
