Hancock County deputy resigns amid domestic violence allegations

Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputy Colin Freeman has resigned amid allegations of domestic violence.

The former K9 handler and narcotics officer was arrested outside his home after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend and resisting arrest.

According to our media partner the Sun Herald Reporter Margaret Baker, Thirty-eight-year-old Colin Freeman of Perkinston submitted his letter of resignation last week after his misdemeanor charge back on August 8th.

Just before 10 p.m. on that summer night deputies responded to a call at a residence he shared with the victim.

She told the officers Freeman had been drunk when he began banging on the bathroom door and telling her to leave the house.

The victim alleged this was after he’d seen a text message to a male friend of hers and he thought she was cheating on him.

Freeman reportedly kicked open the bathroom door and batted the phone out of the victim’s hand then Freeman allegedly shoved her, causing her to fall and hit the corner of the countertop resulting in a large red mark on the lower right side of her back.

The suspect left the residence before deputies arrived.

When Freeman later returned, he reportedly became irate and resisted arrest. Three deputies wrestled him to the ground and put him in handcuffs.

Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam did not return our calls for comment. He told the Sun Herald that Freeman was quote, “A good guy, but we don’t put up with that.”

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Sarah Jones of the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence urges anyone in an abusive situation to reach out to local resources. “Well, domestic violence can happen to anyone, right? It happens across, you know, all classes and all economic statuses — it can happen to anyone.”

Freeman has a December 7th trial date in Hancock County Justice Court. If convicted he could face a fine of up to $500 and or up to 6 months in jail or both. “If you are experiencing domestic violence, no matter your situation, our services are available to you, we encourage you to reach out and we’ll safely plan and assist you as best as possible.”
