Gun fire safety on New Year’s Eve
It’s a popular holiday tradition for people to fire guns off at midnight New Year’s Eve. However, bullets from the sky can make New Year’s Eve celebrations deadly.
Police around the country have urged residents against the dangerous practice of shooting off guns to celebrate the New Year and warned of criminal charges against those who do.
In the City of Biloxi, people accused of violating the city’s firearm ordinance will face a misdemeanor charge. If convicted, a violater could be fined up to $1,000 and could spend as much as 90 days in jail.
News 25 spoke to Darryl Muller, the general manager at Dad’s Super Pawn in Gulfport, who told us ammunition sales have increased throughout the week. “We instruct all our sales people that if they have any inclination that the customer is purchasing this ammunition to fire it up in the air for celebratory reasons, we will not sell to the customer. It’s very dangerous. We don’t recommend it. It’s just not a very good thing to do.”
Last year, five people were wounded in New Orleans because of celebratory gun fire.
