Gulfport’s Mary Frances Symmes wins Gatorade Player of the Year

Gulfport girls soccer’s Mary Frances Symmes was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Mississippi.

That’s three in a row for Gulfport, including Kate Smith winning the award two years in a row, and the cherry on top for Symmes who helped lead the Lady Admirals all the way back to the 6A state championship game for the third time in four years with an overall record of 19-2-2.

Once Smith left for Ole Miss, Symmes took on a much more attacking role, scoring 22 of her 32 career goals as a senior to go along with 17 of her 45 career assists.

According to prepsoccer.com, the former News 25 Student Athlete of the Week is the nation’s 61st ranked player for the class of 2023 and is now on her way to NC State after winning 82 games in her high school career.

In the classroom, Symmes was a 3.88 student.
