Gulfport’s Finest Back on the Diamond
Before Gulfport baseball is allowed to officially start practice under MHSAA regulations, the team is taking a P.E. class together comprised of current and former players.
Yankees pitcher Jonathan Holder isn’t the only one. Also taking the diamond is a pair of Tulane players: Grant Brown, who is a redshirt junior outfielder, and sophomore shortstop Jonathan Artigues who actually hails from St. Stanislaus.
Then there’s right-handed pitcher Alex Nelms who is gearing up for his freshmen season at Southern Miss. Altogether that makes for a nice little homecoming for these former Admirals.
Brown said, “I just like to honestly go fishing, go to the beach. I really miss, like I like being by the water, but other than that just relaxing on the beach, coming back and seeing my friends. It’s just relaxing.”
Artigues said, “Oh, definitely see my high school friends. We try to get on the water, that’s one thing we love to do. Just being around the guys that you spent four or five years with in high school is a really, really good thing to do over breaks.”
Nelms said, “Most of these guys are still some of my closest friends, the seniors, my brother is a junior. I still keep in touch with all of them, but yeah being out here and not on the team it’s different. But I’m ready to get back, though.”
Gulfport takes the field for its first official practice of 2017 on January 30th.
