Gulfport Yacht Club Offshore Challenge Cup

Hundreds of people from across the country are dropping their boats into the water at the Gulfport Yacht Club and revving up their engines to kick off the 39th annual Gulfport Yacht Club Offshore Challenge Cup.

The races got underway today and will go until Sunday. Teams from Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana and right here from the Coast will be competing for the challenge cup prize. A team out of New Orleans has snagged the top spot the past ten years.

This year there will be multiple chances for other teams to take home the coveted trophies. Gulfport Yacht Club Sailing Director Sampson Vasquez said, “It’s four different classes so there are four different classes that teams can put boats to. Your team is not competing against another boat you bring. So, the faster boats are in A class, that I am lucky to race on. It goes all the way down to B class, C class, and the slower boats and then D class. It really tests the yacht clubs ability to race different types of boats.”
