A Gulfport woman will serve 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to shooting an ex-boyfriend during an argument and waiting more than an hour before seeking medical help.

40-year-old Edna Rivers was sentenced to 40 years for second-degree murder, with 20 years suspended and 20 to serve, and 10 years for tampering with physical evidence. The sentences will run consecutively and Rivers also will have five years of probation.

The case stemmed from an October 26, 2022 incident when Harrison County deputies were called to Singing River Hospital in Gulfport in reference to a shooting victim.

The victim was identified as 35-year-old Kendray Stallworth of Gautier.

Video showed Rivers arriving at the hospital in Stallworth’s car, telling a nurse that her friend had been shot or stabbed. She initially told deputies Stallworth arrived at her house and then collapsed. She said she drove him to the hospital because there was no answer when she called 911.

However, a search of Rivers’ house found a 9mm shell casing and blood. Rivers later admitted she shot Stallworth, her ex-boyfriend, during an argument and waited more than an hour before getting him to a hospital. She also said she gave the gun to her sister after getting her to help get Stallworth in the car to take him to the hospital.

“More than an hour passed from the time Mr. Stallworth had been shot to the time he arrived at the hospital — valuable time that could’ve been used to save his life,” said Assistant District Attorney Jasmine Magee who prosecuted the case.
