Gulfport teen gearing up for racing season
Local racing season is just a few weeks away and there is a local teen looking to make a splash.
Tyler Smith, a 15-year-old Gulfport High sophomore, comes from a racing family. He raced go-karts from a young age and is now racing in the National Crate Street Stock Division.
In an abbreviated schedule last year, Smith finished in the top 150 of all racers in the category.
He and many others took to the track at Outlaw Speedway’s practice day Saturday, hoping to shake off the rust and be ready for the show.
Smith talks about his start and the family operation. “Me and my grandparents, we run the whole show. We’ve been doing it since we were younger. They’ve been doing it for close to 30, 40 years almost. So, we started talking about it, my cousin raced since he was my age.”
Catch Tyler and other local racers at Outlaw Speedway’s Opening Day March 11th. Gates open at 4 p.m. Grandstand tickets start at $15 and kids five and under get in free.
