Gulfport students petitioning for traditional graduation plans
In an effort to make their voices heard, some members of Gulfport High’s 2020 senior class are petitioning.
Many Gulfport High seniors and parents are devastated about the recently released graduation plans. Today, students picked up their caps and gowns and received a date and time between May 11th and May 15th to have their personal graduation ceremony.
Students will arrive at the school and be recorded as they walk across the stage and receive their diploma.
Students are limited to just their parents attending.
The recording will include a student message and valedictorian speech and the video will be released on May 27th.
A petition was created with a goal of 1,000 signatures to allow input from the senior class and concerned community members. Gulfport High Senior Ellie Herndon said, “It’s more about giving the seniors a voice about this matter. Gulfport prides itself on how our students are problem solvers and how we can make an impact on our community. So, we just felt like we wanted to speak out about this. So, I’m glad the petition was able to give students a way to feel like they made an impact and a decision at our school.”
