Gulfport Students Learn About Starting a Career

“What next?” That is the question high school seniors may hear often as graduation approaches. Luckily, the City of Gulfport and United Way are helping high school students with that next step. It’s all part of a senior exiting program called Rising Stars. News 25’s Gina Tomlinson has the details about today’s event.
As another generation hits the job market, Gulfport High School seniors from the Academic Institute Program won’t be left in the dark about what it takes to be hired. Career Pathway Specialist Sandy East said, “Seniors that are going to graduate in the next couple weeks and we’re trying to get them ready for the real world.”
In a five part workshop at the Knight Nonprofit Center in Gulfport, students sat down with real professionals in the community to network and learn what employers are looking for. Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes was the keynote speaker. “This is a big transitional period for them and they’re about to step out into the world. We want to give them as much encouragement and direction as possible,” said Mayor Hewes.
One of the sessions students participated in was a mock interview. Students sat down with an employer and were asked questions such as “Why do you want this Job?” and “Why should we hire you?” Students say the interviews will be a real asset for them moving forward in their careers. Student Andrew Lincoln said, “I think it’s really going to help me through just talking and just being open because throughout high school you don’t get a lot of interview skills so throughout this thing you just get to learn more.”
Through seminars students also had the chance to learn about managing bank accounts and tips for starting a career. “Put your best foot forward. You get one chance to make the first impression so make it a good one,” said Mayor Hewes.
As graduation day approaches, so does the day you may see these new faces as professionals, coworkers, or rising stars in our community.
