Gulfport Sportsplex hosting softball and baseball tournaments this weekend
The Gulfport Sportsplex will be a bit busier than usual this weekend.
The Gulfport Sportsplex is home to not just one, but two tournaments this weekend.
In order to kick off the festivities, the tournament directors hosted an opening ceremony for both the softball and baseball teams. Softball Tournament Director Rena Hall said, “Having it on the beach is totally cool for the kids, we’re stuck at a ball field for the next four days so having the opportunity to play in the water, mingle with everybody here on the beach, just enjoying it as a family, as team members, it’s pretty cool.”
The two tournaments are projected to bring over 5,000 visitors to the Gulf Coast and the estimated economic impact is around $6 million, but the softball directors do it more for just the money. Tournament Director Ashleigh Strasser said, “The important part for us is to see different amounts of girls, different divisions, different areas and different states coming together and playing under one sanctioning body, playing under one set of rules, and just being able to just come out here and have a whole lot of fun, play different teams, make new friends, and just have a different experience out here.”
There are over 700 girls competing for the title of World Series Champion of 2022. There are 63 teams and they range from age four all the way up to 18.
In order to get everyone fired up for the weekend, the tournament hosted a skills competition for the girls. They can compete as a team and an individual and they can earn medals.
Teams traveled from states like Alabama, Louisiana, and Georgia, but it’s is also special for our Mississippi athletes to play a world series this close to home. Softball player Leah Harris said, “I’m happy it’s local because my family members can watch me travel and play.”
