Gulfport Relief Team Leaves for Baton Rouge
After 36 hours of collecting donations, a team from Gulfport left early this morning to provide relief in Baton Rouge.
Three 18-wheelers plus two additional trailers filled with cleaning supplies, food, cases of water and other donations rolled out and headed west, all part of another local mission to help flood victims. The trucks tagged alongside a caravan of firefigters, police officers and Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes.
Even Gulfport firefighters were impressed with the quick response as Gulf Coast residents poured in to give donations in such a short amount of time, paying it forward after so many of us received help in the past during natural disasters. Gulfport firefighter Tim Holliman said, “We started this venture Monday morning thinking we were just going to fill up one 18-wheeler and it turned into three. I am so pleased and proud of the community on how they’ve come together to help us out. Just to get over there brings back memories of Katrina and what we went through here and to be able to go back and be able to pay it forward to these people. I don’t really know what we’re going to get into, but looking forward to helping some people out.”
So far over 30,000 people have been rescued in southern Louisiana during the recent flooding.
