Gulfport Ranks Third in the Nation for Healthcare Access

While Mississippi tends to rank on the bottom of national lists, one South Mississippi city is among the top in a recent study.
Gulfport has been named the third best city in the country for healthcare access.
When you’re looking for a house, what do you look for? A good neighborhood, good schools, and nearby parks are all common answers. People often overlook the availability of healthcare providers in the area. If you live in Gulfport, the good news is the city has just been ranked third in the top ten list of cities for healthcare access nationwide, a study conducted by smartasset.com.
Brenda Waltz, CEO of Garden Park Medical Center, said, “That means that there is adequate healthcare providers for folks in the community that we serve.”
Gulfport’s ranking takes into consideration the number of hospital beds, hospital-based primary physicians, registered nurses, and doctor’s offices per 100,000 residents. The study commends Gulfport for having so many options for about 70,000 residents. Patients can choose from a number of primary physicians, Garden Park Medical Center in Orange Grove, or the state’s second largest employer in Memorial Hospital.
Gulfport Public Information Officer Chris Vignes said, “They are a backbone to operations to hospitals here, them and Garden Park. The services they provide, they’re not only providing just to patients but to the community as a whole.”
City officials are hopeful the good publicity will encourage more people to come live on the Coast. “People will know now what we’ve know all this time, how great of a place we live and now they have the opportunity to see more about it,” said Vignes.
While we’re so use to seeing the Magnolia State fall to the bottom of the ranks, seeing a Coast city praised for an area as crucial as healthcare is a welcomed breath of fresh air. “I think Mississippi gets a bad rap just because of Mississippi in the past. However, this is positive news, not only for the state of Mississippi, but for the awesome Gulf Coast community,” said Waltz.
