Gulfport Public Works Department Making History

Gulfport is the first city in the entire state of Mississippi to have the public works department officially accredited.
Gulfport officials say the accreditation is an international designation that allows their policies and procedures to be compared with organizations around the world. The department was awarded this month by the American Public Works Association.
Gulfport Public Works Director Wayne Miller tells News 25 the department has been trying to get the international accreditation for a long time and it is not an easy process. “We had the evaluators which came from Virgina, Florida and came down and spent three days with us. They picked apart every practice and policy we have, read it line by line, looked at all of our attachments, making sure that it met what was required through the American Public Works Association.”
The department will be featured in the American Public Works Association’s magazine next month.
