Gulfport proposes new Tree Ordinance to protect urban canopy
GULFPORT, Miss. (Jan. 23, 2025) — The City of Gulfport is introducing an updated ordinance to better protect its historic trees and urban canopy.
The ordinance establishes clear rules for tree removal, closes loopholes in existing regulations, and promotes responsible development.
Under the new law, individuals or businesses must obtain a permit before removing a protected tree. Contractors will also be required to secure permits directly for their work; permits obtained by third parties will not be accepted.
These measures are the result of a rampant “ask forgiveness vs. permission” mentality, which has resulted in the illegal destruction of many trees throughout our city.
“These remarkable trees are unique to coastal communities in the Southeast,” said Mayor Billy Hewes. “They are iconic, serve as part of our identity, and contribute to what makes Gulfport distinctive and special.”
The updated ordinance will be voted on today, January 23, by the Gulfport City Council at 1:30 at city hall.
