Gulfport Police Officers and Civilians Recognized
Every day thousands of men and women across the country wake up and go to their job as police officers.
Twice a year, the Gulfport Police Department holds an awards ceremony to ensure the hard work and great deeds of their officers doesn’t go unrecognized. Today they recognized retirements, achievements, and great deeds of some of their officers. Three civilians were also awarded with the Civilian Exceptional Service Medal for their courage when stopping to help a person out of a fiery car crash.
Chief Leonard Papania said, “You know, it really is indicative of what makes policing work when people are willing to come forth and assist with law enforcement. Obviously, these guys went above and beyond but we’re taking time today to recognize them also.”
Sgt. Charles Koewers was given the Medal of Valor for his heroic actions protecting the lives of himself and fellow officers in February. Patrolman Luis Garcia was given the Life Saving Medal for talking a suicidal man down from the edge of a bridge in April.
