Gulfport Police Athletic League Closes Its Doors

The Gulfport Police Athletic League, known as P.A.L., has closed its door indefinitely.

The after school program that helped keep youth on the right path will no longer be offered. Police Chief Leonard Papania tells News 25 that the director of P.A.L. and board members all feel the after school program was an unneeded duplicate of programs offered by the city. Chief Papania says the department is working on other projects to help troubled youth.

Papania says, “I certainly want to send the message that the dedication towards our youth in this police department will continue. We’re just going to move away from the after school business right now.”

Chief Papania says he is focusing on coming up with alternatives to juvenile detention for kids who commit small crimes to steer them back onto the right path.
