Gulfport mayor looking to begin Daniel Boulevard project soon
The City of Gulfport is getting prepared to continue moving forward with the road project on Daniel Boulevard.
The plan for this project is to create a road connecting Daniel Boulevard and Canal Road.
Tomorrow, Mayor Billy Hewes and his team plans to go to the city council and ask them to expedite the hiring of an engineer to get the construction process started.
Mayor Hewes says his team is hopeful to get construction started in about a year. The estimated cost of the project is about $25 million with $20 million being available for the project as of now.
Mayor Hewes says this project will help traffic back-ups as well as help businesses along the boulevard. “If people can’t get in and get out in a safe and reliable and easy fashion, they’ll find someplace else to go. The sportsplex is a huge draw. This retail mecca here is a huge draw, so it just represents a lot of opportunity, so we’re glad to have the challenge and we think it’s going to yield great results for a long time and create jobs in the process.”
Mayor Hewes says he hopes to see the road completed two years from now.
