Gulfport man has 130 pound tumor removed

A Gulfport man returns to the Coast after California doctors remove a 130 pound tumor from his lower abdomen. News 25’s Kendra Turley takes us to his homecoming in Gulfport this evening and shares more of his journey.
A 130 pound tumor kept Gulfport resident Roger Logan constrained to a recliner for years. Roger first noticed the problem about 15 years ago, but multiple doctors told him it was simply just fat. Roger’s daughter, Casey Logan, said, “He couldn’t get out very much without the help of my mom and I. We would help him go to the bathroom, help him get into his wheelchair, that kind of stuff.”
He recently learned it was an infected, ingrown hair that grew into a massive tumor over time. Once the tumor reached 130 to 140 pounds, doctors told Logan it was too risky for him to have surgery. “It was life or death. Either way I was going to die from the tumor or I was going to live through surgery,” said Roger Logan.
With a smile on his face and faith in his heart, Logan, his wife, and a family friend made the 40 plus hour drive to Bakersfield, California to have the tumor surgically removed.
After a successful surgery, a few weeks of rehab and another 40 plus hour drive across the country, Roger Logan kept his promise and returned back to his Gulfport home. “I had a positive attitude going to put the mask on me. I said let’s do this. Let’s go. I don’t know what it was.”
Roger’s wife, Kitty Logan, said, “He was supposed to just now be leaving the hospital to go to rehab. We made a 2,000 plus mile trip home in a regular vehicle, something he hasn’t done in two years.”
With no complications and feeling absolutely no pain, Roger plans to spend the next few weeks focusing on recovery. “I still have other plastic surgeries and a knee surgery. My knees are blown from all the years of carrying that. I have a lot of work ahead of me there.”
Meanwhile, his wife and daughter are planning a long list of activities they haven’t been able to do as a family for years. “The day I got there, I was asked for a goal. It was to get back to Mississippi,” said Roger.
