Gulfport Lady Admirals defeat Ocean Springs Lady Greyhounds in 6A South State Championship Game

The Gulfport girls soccer team is in the midst of its best run in program history, just one year removed from winning back-to-back 6A state titles.

However, the one thing this senior class had never done is beat Ocean Springs.

Lady Admirals hosting the Lady Greyhounds in the 6A South State Championship Game. Gulfport looking to make it three in four years. Ocean Springs looking to punch its first ticket back since 2019.

Gulfport wins 2-1, back to state for the third time in four years despite losing 13 seniors from last year’s team including the back-to-back Gatorade Player of the Year Kate Smith. It’s the Lady Admirals once again.  Gulfport forward Mary Frances Symmes said, “It just means that much more that we didn’t have the roster we did last year. I mean we didn’t make it that far. I mean, I don’t know, it’s just the heart that they had was just awesome.”

Gulfport Center Mid Emily Boles said, “It feels amazing to prove everyone wrong. Some of us honestly didn’t even believe in ourselves at the beginning. But then we started working hard and winning and we all bonded and we all came together and worked hard as a team and it felt really good.”

Gulfport Head Girls Soccer Coach Chris Pryor said, “The clock couldn’t run out fast enough. I told the girls it could happen. I believed in us. But every once in a while, you’ll understand that sometimes things happen. Last year I felt like, selfishly, that we probably had the best roster in the state. But it wasn’t our time. Here we are 12 months removed, and we’re going to state. I couldn’t be happier. I was overcome a little bit. It was a real surreal moment.”

Gulfport will face the winner of Clinton and Lewisburg which won’t be decided until Thursday.
