The Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown Foundation of Louisiana recognized the hard work of Patrick Wadsworth’s Technical Writing Class with a grant from the STEM LIBRARY LAB.

Wadsworth’s class’ most recent partnership with the MSU Extensions Center brought Admirals into the Native Plant Producer Network, propagating local marsh grasses for living shorelines in the flourishing aquaponic systems of Gulfport School District.

STEM LIBRARY LAB supports brave new projects in STEM classrooms across southern Louisiana and now Mississippi.

The grant will offset the cost of supplies for building of grow bed tables and transportation of the mature marsh grasses. The grasses are critical to the waterways and coastlines of Louisiana and Mississippi furthering the concept that we are ONE COAST. When members of the Native Plant Producer Network successfully raise these grasses, they return them to MSU or help to plant them directly as part of a living shoreline.

Wadsworth’s class is the first to be recognized by the adjacent state of Louisiana but according to him, it’s all in a day’s work, “Our mission is to teach Admirals about the vast resources here on the coast and the skills to build and protect those resources. They all love South Mississippi already; we just instill a little more ownership and confidence to LEAD Conservation. Nora Skinner, Kaitlyn Sampson and Allie Barnett have served as our community partner mentors devoting time, energy and sweat to our Admirals.
