Gulfport High student taken into custody after gun found in backpack

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- Gulfport School District has released a statement regarding an incident at the high school.

Administrators were informed of a safety-related incident at Gulfport High School. School administrators began investigating the incident. While searching a student’s backpack, they found a firearm.

The school’s administrative team immediately followed protocol by notifying school resource officers.

The student was taken into custody and transported off campus without incident.

In a statement, the school district said: “We want to assure you that at no time were any students or staff in danger, and no threats were made in connection with this incident. The situation was handled swiftly and safely thanks to the professionalism of our staff and the rapid response of our resource officers.”

“We understand how concerning situations like this can be, and we want to emphasize that the safety and security of our students and staff remain our top priority. We are grateful for the vigilance and cooperation of everyone involved and remain committed to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.”
