Gulfport High School celebrated National Signing Day with seven signees
It was National Signing Day for every sport outside of football and basketball, and the Gulfport admiral athletic program definitely got the memo.
We’re kicking things off with the blue and orange as The Herb was filled with proud teammates, coaches, and fans. Seven Gulfport admirals officially put pen to paper to further their academic and athletic careers.
Gulfport softball outfielder and middle infielder, Haley Hughes, is letting the ink dry with Northwest Florida State College. Followed by Hughes, six members of the recent South State championship baseball team are signing their letters of intent.
First up, right handed pitcher and infielder Ethan Surowiec is headed north to Oxford as he joins the Ole Miss Rebel program.
Next up, the shortstop and right handed pitcher Joel Smith will be flying like an eagle with the Meridian Community College program.
Outfielder and 3rd baseman Ethan Garner will be joining the Pearl River Wildcats on the diamond.
Both right handed pitcher Elijah Barney and outfielder Darelle Brown will be continuing their baseball careers at Miles college in Alabama.
Lastly, the Admiral quarterback, right handed pitcher, and outfielder Nico Williams will be continuing both his football and baseball careers at Southeastern Louisiana.
“I’ve always played both growing up and just hearing that they’d give me the opportunity to both it pretty much immediately got my interest and after hearing that I was pretty much locked in on being able to do that especially with the love of both sports and just being able to continue doing that in college sounds great,” said Williams.
“In ninth grade, I started to get the calls from coaches and the coaching staff, Coach Bianco, Coach Lafferty, and Coach Clement, we had great talks and had a great relationship with all of those coaches and we kept in touch and seeing the environment up there and watching games it eventually just clicked and I was like this is my home and I’m going to fit in right here,” Surowiec said.
“I’ve been playing softball for like ten years now so it’s really exciting to see that all the hard work paid off. They’ve always had a really competitive softball team which I like and I knew I wanted to do something like that and I love the area, the housing, and just everything about it was just what I wanted,” said Hughes.
Congratulations to all of the Admirals on their hardwook and determination both on the field and in the classroom to get to this point.
