Gulfport High Robotics Team going to World Championship

The Gulfport High Robotics Team is heading to the World Championship.

Team Fusion 364 is fresh off a first-place win at the Rocket City Regional Competition in Huntsville. They’re turning right around to head to the World Championship in Houston, Texas where they placed second overall last year.

Engineering Teacher James Sonnier says the team is currently ranked 14th in the world.

Sonnier and members of the team say they’re ready to take on the world and are proud of the hard work that went into building the robot. “It’s been a lot of work. We’ve been here night and day the past four months, around the clock, weekends. Probably 30 to 40 hours of meeting a week, doing programing, design, manufacturing and testing.”

Senior Robotics Team member Colton Bruni said, “We started in high school working on this type of robotics. We’ve been working with this team for four years here and it’s really been a culmination of the years, learning from people that were here before us, continuing Fusion’s legacy.”

Senior Robotics Team member Conner Norvell said, “We put in a lot of time this year. I would really like to see it all pay off and us do really well at Worlds.”

Around 440 teams, including Team Fusion, will take on the World Championship next week.
