Gulfport High Construction Continues on First Day of School
Summer vacation came to an end for students in Gulfport today, but construction at Gulfport High continued without a break.
News 25’s Kendra Turley caught up with students to see how they are dealing with distractions on the first day back.
Stuffed backpacks and new shoes filled the hallways of Gulfport High for the first day of school today. Outside of those hallways, the scene was a little different with dirt, construction cones and bulldozers everywhere.
Senior John Michael Ladner said, “For the freshmen, it’s not very much of an inconvenience since they’re being introduced to the construction. So, for them, it’ll be easier with the transitions because they’re used to construction being there. For everyone else, it’s a little different but it’s not that big of an inconvenience for us.”
Gulfport High started a $42 million construction project back in June. Today was the first day students experienced the construction on campus. Senior Kolby Wesson said, “Teachers have done a great job preparing us for what it would be like today. Counselors were in the courtyard this morning willing to help anyone who didn’t know where they were going. It definitely is a little different, but I’m excited to see all of the changes that Gulfport has in store.”
With the construction going on, students driving to Gulfport High School may want to leave a little earlier. Students lost a parking lot on the west side of campus due to all of the construction. Gulfport High Principal Michael Lindsey says other than that, the students are focused and ready to go. “The actual school day from 8:20 to 3:35 is unchanged. Once you get on campus and walk around, you really don’t see the construction. You don’t hear the construction because it’s far enough away from the buildings.”
When phase one of construction is complete next year, students will enjoy a brand new fine arts facility, athletic field house and a junior-senior academic building. “I’m excited for the freshmen and sophomores who are going to have a new school. I’m going to miss the old school, it’s what I grew up with, but I’m excited for them,” said Ladner.
The expected finish date for the fine arts facility and the athletic facility is July 2016. The expected finish date for the new academic building will be a little later in December 2016.
