Gulfport Head Boys Basketball Coach Owen Miller leaving for MGCCC

Yesterday was a bittersweet day at Gulfport High School where the boys basketball program celebrated the end of an era upon the departure of Head Coach Owen Miller, but the good news is he isn’t going far.

Miller stepping down from his post to accept the same position at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College where his father used to play.

Miller’s resume speaks for itself, having won 260 games in 12 seasons with the Admirals, including the school’s ninth state championship in 2014.

Prior to his time at Gulfport, Miller was a Division I assistant coach for 17 years, having made previous stops at Mississippi State, UTSA, Colorado State, and Ole Miss.

A 1989 graduate of Gulfport, Miller won two state titles of his own as a player in ’87 and ’88 under the legendary Bert Jenkins.

Miller told News 25 that he’s feeling a lot of different emotions and he’s very humbled to be in this position. “I’m humbled for this opportunity, and I’m really excited…obviously feeling a lot of emotions. You know, it’s hard to leave Gulfport. It’s the place I graduated from, and my mother taught there for over 20 years and… feelings are all over the place. You’re excited, you’re a little bit sad for leaving your team and leaving the guys that you built so many relationships with, but at the same time it’s the next step in my journey as a basketball coach.”

Miller went on to say he feels blessed and he is thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the Gulf Coast family.
