Gulfport Harbor Farmers Market
Every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Gulfport Harbor Farmers Market allows locals to come in and shop for produce only products.
Fourteen vendors showed up with jam, natural grass-fed beef, fruit, and much more. The produce-only market idea came after Hurricane Katrina when the market in Ocean Springs was asked to come to Gulfport once a week.
Buying from the market gives locals a chance to meet the farmers and know exactly where the items come from.
Finding vendors who truly produce their own products can be challenging when putting a weekly market together. Gulfport Harbor Farmers Market Manager Diane Claughton said, “It’s difficult especially finding the farmers who are actually growing things. There are some markets along the Coast that say they are farmers markets, but they are actually resale markets. They may have a farmer, but everybody here makes, grows, and raises whatever they sell. It’s hard to find people that are doing that these days.”
With farmers involved in this market, there is no supply chain. You can go to the farm, meet the farmer and see the products they grow.
