Gulfport Gridiron Club: special guest former Nebraska coach talks CFP system
When the Nebraska football program won its three national championships under Dr. Tom Osborne, the Cornhuskers did so while battling the imperfections of the pre-BCS poll era.
Tonight, the man that recruited Correll Buckhalter out of Mississippi was the keynote speaker at the Gulfport Gridiron Club and the main thing he wanted to talk about was the college football playoff system.
Osborne’s last year of coaching came right before the switch to the BCS rankings and he was quick to jump on board with the new four team experiment as one of the original committee members.
Two years removed from the panel, Osborne still stands by the current process of determining a national champion. “There was controversy when you had the BCS as to who the best two teams were. Sometimes there was a third team that was either undefeated or very powerful, and sometimes even a fourth. But I think with this system now where you have four teams you’re almost certain to get the best two teams among those four, so I think that’s good. I think every Power 5 conference has at least two, three, four good teams in it and so it’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out. There are some big games this weekend.”
The second installment of the college football playoff rankings comes out tomorrow. Next week will be the final meeting of the year for the Gulfport Gridiron Club.
