Gulfport firefighters put out large trash fire

This afternoon, Gulfport Fire Department reported to the scene of a trash fire in north Gulfport.

The fire happened outside a home located on the corner of Miles Drive and Christopher Drive. According to neighbors, the pile of trash had been there since yesterday after the people living in the home moved out. There were no injuries or major structural damage reported.

News 25 spoke to Kathy Strickland, a woman living in the house across the street from the scene of the fire. She tells News 25 she made the 911 call and used her personal water hoses before the fire department arrived to help put out the fire. “Tried to save it from spreading, catching the house on fire. It was just a big trash fire and it could have easily gotten the wood fence on fire. It was big because there were tires in it and they were on fire so black smoke was rolling. It was a big fire.”

Strickland says she did not see anyone around the area prior to the fire and does not expect foul play. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
