Gulfport Fire Department earns international accreditation

The Gulfport Fire Department earns coveted international accreditation.

The department has earned accredited agency status from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International by meeting the criteria established through the organization’s voluntary self-assessment and accreditation program.

Gulfport Fire is one of 309 agencies in the world to achieve internationally accredited agency status with the CFAI and the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

Gulfport is one of two departments in the state to accomplish this achievement. Columbus, MS first acquired its accreditation in 2014. Fire Chief Billy Kelley said, “I’m proud of the team because when we started this process, I was in the deputy chief position, but I saw how good it was going to make us and how fixing certain polices and doing certain things for our department. We want to do the best for our community and they deserve that, and that’s what this process is going to do.”

The Gulfport Fire Department is one of only two agencies in the state with a Class 2 Fire Rating from the Mississippi State Rating Bureau, having been the first to achieve this rating in 2018.
