Gulfport falls to Lewisburg in 6A State Championship Series

In its first state championship appearance since 2017, the Gulfport baseball team drew an extremely tough match up against North state champion Lewisburg.

Last night, the Admirals met their match in game two of the 6A title series, falling by the final count of 11-0.

Gulfport holding its own through the first six innings, but the wheels fell off in the top of the seventh as the Patriots scored the final six runs of the game.

The series was much closer than the final score would suggest after losing a game one pitcher’s duel 2-1.

The Admirals are still in search of their first state crown since 1985, but they know they have absolutely no reason to hang their heads. Head Coach Jamie McMahon said, “That’s what I just told them, the last month and a half and just what they’ve done in the playoff run, that’s where we want our program to be every year, and it’s hard to get here, I mean really hard to get here. There’s a lot of good teams that we had to go through to get here. But you’ve got to credit those guys, but just you tell them that you’re super proud of them, that you love them. I mean they did something not a lot of teams get the chance to do, especially at Gulfport. It’s hard for us and we made it to this point.”

The Admirals finish the 2023 season with an overall record of 22-11.
