Gulfport Council wants funding to help with flooding issues

With all the heavy rain from recent storms, flooding concerns in areas of Gulfport are on the rise.
The subject of flooding becoming an increasing issue in Gulfport was brought up at today’s City Council meeting. Gulfport City Council members spoke out about problematic areas that experience more storm water runoff. They’re concerned the impact is developing into a greater problem in the last few years for business and residents.
Ward Three Councilmember Ella Holmes-Hines tells News 25 drainage improvements are desperately needed for areas in her ward, especially the Turkey Creek Basin. “It is too difficult for that basin to carry that much water at one time. That’s one of the things that I’m getting ready to put a resolution on next time, in full support for the seven million dollar funds to de-snag it. That is going to be a very great attribute there, but it’s not going to give me the support that I need for the storm water run-off.”
Holmes-Hines is planning on taking the matter to the state, requesting for more funding to help fix the drainage issue in her ward.
