Gulfport City-Wide Juneteenth Celebration

Due to severe weather last weekend, the Juneteenth celebration in Gulfport was postponed, but the event will take place tomorrow at the Isaiah Fredricks Community Center.

Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the U.S. The holiday was first celebrated in Galveston, Texas on June 19th in 1865 in the aftermath of the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.

To celebrate Juneteenth, the City of Gulfport will kick things off with a parade followed by a fun filled festival. Free food and drinks will be provided. Juneteenth Celebration Co-Chair Terri Tyler said, “Although we are going to have a good time. We are also going to educate about what Juneteenth is, how you celebrate, what you do. So, what we want the community, all of Gulfport, to come out and be educated about Juneteenth and have a good time be doing so.”

The Freedom Festival will feature local foods, craft vendors, live musical performances, and dancers.
