Gulfport Baseball’s mentality unwavering on eve of season finale

If the moment ever gets too big, bad things tend to happen. That’s why the anthem of head coaches everywhere is one game at a time, but the Gulfport Admirals don’t really have a choice on the eve of their final game of the season.
Win or lose, Gulfport’s historic 2017 campaign will come to an end at the conclusion of game three. The same goes for Tupelo who’s also vying for the 6A State Championship crown come 4 p.m. tomorrow.
The stakes haven’t been this high for the Admirals since 2005, facing elimination and a close out game all wrapped into one.
One game, once chance, one moment to do what they’ve already done this season 33 times and that’s win. Gulfport Centerfielder Dillion Brown said, “Well, before game two Coach Edwards said ‘if somebody had told us at the beginning of the season all we’ve got to do is win two straight games you’ll be state champions, would you take those odds?’ And we were like ‘sounds good.’ So, that statement is kind of true. We’ve just got to work hard to get this second game out the way.”
Gulfport Head Baseball Coach Jamie McMahon said, “This is it. This is the last game no matter what so we’re in a good spot, so I think with that mentality that we’ve had all year they kind of know this is the one game. So I think we’ll be ready.”
Gulfport First Baseman Ethan Saucier said, “I’m pretty happy to make this the last game to possibly win state, I’m happy. I don’t know, I’m just happy, you know?”
The Admirals and the Golden Wave will take the diamond at Trustmark Park in Pearl at 4 p.m. tomorrow.
