Gulf Coast trees being used to restore Mayflower II
Another live oak tree was cut down today to be used in the restoration of the Mayflower II, a reproduction of the boat that transported the pilgrims to America in 1620.
Yesterday, crews from Mystic Seaport and Plymouth Plantation cut down one tree in Pass Christian. Today they cut another in Gulfport in a resident’s yard. All of this is an effort to prepare for the 400th anniversary of the pilgrims’ arrival. Wood from these trees will be used to replace frames and structural pieces on the ship.
The Mayflower II was built from 1955 to 57 at Upham Shipyard in England and sailed to Massachusetts in 1957 and was presented to Plymouth Plantation as a gift to commemorate the historic ties between England and America in the wake of World War II.
