Gulf Coast Skatepark Association pushing for permanent facility, teaching the new generation of skaters
St. Martin, Miss (WXXV)- A new skatepark opens in St. Martin on Saturday, offering new and veteran skaters alike a safe place to practice their craft.
A DIY wooden skatepark opens for the public at the West Jackson County Soccer Complex. The Gulf Coast Skatepark Association hoping this park encourages a permanent facility.
“We wanted something for the new generation, for the kids that are wanting to learn how to skate. Somewhere safe for them,” said Andrew Buras, the vice president of the association.
Buras tells us the association pushes for skateparks across the Gulf Coast – creating a second family for skaters.
Organization members and volunteers are responsible for creating the ramps and rails used, those same people offering lessons to young skaters.
“Not only just the feeling of knowing you’re making a difference, but the community behind it. It’s amazing,” said Buras.
One of those young skaters is Jackson Speth. Jackson is four years old and has been skating for a couple of weeks.
His mother Amy saying Jackson’s dad started skating with him and the rest is history.
“He likes to do the tricks already, that’s something he started off doing,” said Amy Speth. “It gets us out the house and helps him not be so shy.”
Amy saying they started going to the overpass in Biloxi, also saying it’s fun to watch Jackson grow with the sport.
Another young skate who came out is Lenora Lacoste. Lenora has been skating since she was one year old.
Lenora is now three, her parents saying they are the ones who got her into skating.
“We were excited, we actually built some things to put in here too,” said Lauren Lacoste. “Our one year old is all about it too.”
Parents say the skatepark is a plus to have – allowing them to spend time with their kids while also getting out of the house.
“I really like being a part of it, I enjoy getting to spend time with her,” said Lauren.
“It’s awesome, it helps get involved in the community and get kids out,” said Amy. “Get them excited to do stuff and it’s good exercise.”
“It feels like I’m reliving it again, growing up skating with a bunch of friends,” said Buras. “You need to commit and keep on trying. That drives not just skateboarding, but in life. And you see it in these kids.”
