Gulf Coast Rescue Mission celebrates Easter
The Easter holiday is less than two weeks away and the Gulf Coast Rescue Mission is setting the table for a feast and celebration with a seat at the table reserved just for you.
Birds flutter around a simple nail scarred cross in the grounds on the Gulf Coast Rescue Mission. Nearby, a newly build structure has sprung up and will soon be open for business as the site’s new and improved thrift store, replacing the one that burned down back in September 2016. Gulf Coast Rescue Mission Executive Director Tom Mims said, “We’re celebrating Easter, which is the resurrection. We had that fire here about two and a half years ago. This building is the resurrection of the old building. God is still at work. God’s still blessing and God’s still meeting the needs of this community, so that’s what this building is all about.”
Once the new thrift store is complete, building will begin on the slab right beside it. The facility will house a new dormitory, office space, and more. “We had six buildings here, and we lost our main building. Instead of having one building, we decided to split it up in two, so if we ever had a situation like that again, we wouldn’t be as crippled as we were that first week.”
The week of the fire is one Office Manager Tammy Mims will never forget. “A lady came out and she brought us a cross, a wooden cross, and said out of the ashes, everything gets back on track and it rises. I think we put it up on this cross at one time, and it is a good thing to see it going up.”
Faith is said to be evidence of things not yet seen. Fast forward nearly three years later and the proof is in this bigger and better building that has risen, just like the Savior that the Mims and others here at the Mission will be celebrating come Easter weekend.
It’s a free feast and all are welcome to stop by at noon on Saturday, April 20th. “We’re going to have our annual Easter Meal the day before Easter. We started this about six years ago. It’s something we look forward to just like Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s not quite as big as it is, but it’s growing.”
As is this mission as it continues to build on solid ground.
