Gulf Coast Legend Joins Walk of Fame
The legendary mad potter of Biloxi is joining a historic line-up of famous names that have come out of Mississippi.
People gathered outside the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art today as George Ohr’s name on a star was unveiled. Ohr’s star joins honorees on the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment’s Walk of Fame.
The walk of fame celebrates great artists, poets, musicians, writers and actors from Mississippi. Elvis Presley, Morgan Freeman, Walter Anderson, and BB King are just some of the walk of fame’s other Mississippi stars.
Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience President and CEO Mark Tulos said, “He had an impact, not only on the culture here on the Gulf Coast with his pottery and with his art, but also in New Orleans. He taught at the school and he was a familiar face in the arts there at the turn of the 20th century. George Ohr, the mad potter of Biloxi as they call him, was really an iconic figure for the Gulf Coast. When you think of Biloxi, one of the first things you think about is George Ohr.”
Ohr’s star will be installed on November 16th.
