Gulf Coast greats Carson Paetow and McCarty English help the Golden Eagles clinch their second Sun Belt series
This past weekend the Southern Miss Golden Eagles hosted the Troy Trojans for their third Sun Belt test of the year, and they truly demonstrated just how gritty they could be. The Golden Eagles mercy ruled their opponent 14-4 in seven innings thanks to a walk off by Matthew Russo on Friday, but they fell just short in game two 8-9. All eyes now on game three as the Golden Eagles look to take the series, and they’re going to need some help from the 228.
Saturday starter Will Armistead lets no one cross the plate in the top of the first, and the Eagles have two on base early in the bottom of the first. Then comes the Vancleave Villain and one of the captains, Carson Paetow up to the plate, and he sends it 386 feet over the right field fence for his sixth home run of the year. The Golden Eagles soar early 3-0 after one complete.
The Trojans tie it up 3 all after 6 complete, and the Eagles respond with 2 more in the seventh, but Troy loads the bases with no outs in the eighth.
Who’s the skipper gonna call on? None other than Ocean Springs alum and true freshman right handed pitcher McCarthy English, who has wasted no time on making his name known. English trusts the guys behind him and they get the job done finding 3 outs allowing no runners across the plate. English stays dialed in during the 9th and he keeps the Trojans where he found them, closing the game out with a final score of 5-3.
News 25 spoke with English after yet another successful outing, and he owes all the success to the incredible defense behind him.
“Obviously I didn’t have my best stuff today. Russo and Nick made an awesome double play right there to help bail me out and DMac made a great play in center field to help me out as well,” said English. “It feels great to be able to come out here and contribute to the team and help each other win and it definitely means a lot to me that Coach Oz has a lot of faith in me as well as the other players.”
This week Southern Miss will hit the road to Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday followed by another Sun Belt series against South Alabama starting on Friday.
