Gulf Coast Community Ministries Collecting Supplies for the Homeless

The chill is in the air, which means colder months are ahead. Gulf Coast Community Ministries is once again hosting its Camping for Hope event to provide for the homeless.

From now until Thursday, the organization will be collecting tarps, sleeping bags, tents, and other camping items that can be used during the winter months. You can drop off your items at First Baptist Church, Gulf Coast Community Ministries, Northwood Church, The Shed in Gulfport, or Scuba Steve Clothing.

James Bates of the Gulf Coast Community Ministries says, “There’s a huge need. Last year, we had 60 homeless men and women come with short notice in the cold and rain. So this year, we’re expecting over 100 homeless to come to the event. We’re giving free C.T.A. bus passes to allow them to get there from Gulfport and Biloxi, so we hope that helps.”

Many shelters do not open until temperatures hit freezing, but cold damp nights can also be dangerous for anyone without shelter. Friday night, the event will start with a campfire and fellowship. After camping out Friday night, there will be breakfast and haircuts available while the collected items are distributed from 8 a.m. until noon. The event will be on 15th Street just east of St. Peter’s by the Sea.
