Gulf Coast Carnival Association Parade
We begin tonight with the oldest parade on the Gulf Coast, a tradition dating back over 100 years. Many probably remember attending the Gulf Coast Carnival Association’s parade when they were little. Today, residents crowded the streets, keeping that tradition alive. News 25’s Kendra Turley begins our coverage of Mardi Gras 2016 on the Coast.
Costumes, music and decked out trailers filled the streets of Biloxi for the annual Gulf Coast Carnival Association’s Mardi Gras parade. Parade-goer Glenda Anderson said, “My husband and I make it a tradition to ride the float, weather permitting. We’re just looking forward to a great day. It’s beautiful weather.”
Celebrating its 108th year, the GCCA parade is the oldest parade on the Coast and a tradition for many South Mississippians. Parade-goer Baileigh Vaughan said, “I’m out here with my mom and dad and my little brother. He’s turning four today. I’m super excited for him.”
What makes this parade such a big hit? Some say it’s the family atmosphere that draws in hundreds and hundreds each year. Paige Miller said, “We love for them to have a great time.” Parade-goer Josh Repp said, “It’s a good time, that’s what it’s all about here for the kids.”
Other says it’s the timing of the parade. “It’s during the day time so for those us who to go to work tomorrow, we’ll at least be able to recuperate afterwards,” said Anderson.
From bead-catchers to bead-throwers, one thing everyone can agree on was that this year’s weather was perfect.
With a parade like this, it’s safe to say you don’t have to travel to the Crescent City to get the full Mardi Gras experience. “I think we have it just as good as New Orleans does but even better maybe. I don’t even know,” said Miller. “It’s all about coming down here. Y’all have a good time down here and that’s what it’s all about,” said Repp.
