Gulf Coast Blood Banks are Low
If a tragedy or mass shooting like the one in Orlando were to strike, the Mississippi Gulf Coast would not have enough blood in their banks to save lives.
That’s why the Blood Center is urging folks to get out and donate, especially if you have O negative type blood.
The Blood Center Coast Region Supervisor Gina Necaise tells News 25 donations tend to drop in the summer months as more donors take vacations, school is out and donating blood is no longer a top priority. “Because if we were ever to face something like Orlando here, we would want to make sure that our shelves are at full supply, at least have that three day supply. In case anything happens, we’d be ready to act. One unit of blood can actually save up to three people’s lives.”
There is a donor location off Highway 90 in Gautier and the Blood Center is holding a drive on Thursday in Diamondhead.
