Guardian Angels in Uniform: Jackson County Deputies Save Baby’s Life

A Jackson County family is celebrating life today, the life of their 13-day-old infant who nearly choked to death just a few days ago. Until three Jackson County sheriff deputies and her older sister came to the rescue.
Today, the thankful family reunited with these heroes in a much different, tear-filled gathering. News 25’s Bryan Kennedy was there and shares the heartwarming story.
Jackson County sheriff deputies Nathan Fisher and Chris Pitalo shared a warm embrace with parents Larry and Meghan Beddingfield and cradled the couple’s 13-day-old daughter, Sawyer, who almost choked to death just five days ago. “She wasn’t doing nothing. She was all purple. I started to get her sucker, she started crying again,” said Larry Beddingfield.
As dad Larry and mom Megan tried to clear their newborn baby’s airway, Sawyer’s big sister, Kylie, reached out for help. “I pressed the button and they said ‘9-1-1-, what’s your emergency?” and I hurried up and handed it to mom.”
These two deputies and Sergeant Mitchell McMillan quickly arrived on the scene and these very arms that cradled Sawyer today helped save her life on Saturday, as the deputies started to clear Sawyer’s airway using a suction bulb. Moments later, what could have been a tragic situation turned into one of relief. “We’ve been in situations like these before where this has not always been the outcome and those are always the sad days for but when we hear the baby cry and we know the ambulance is right around the corner, praise God,” said Deputy Nathan Fisher.
Today, baby Sawyer is just fine and her mom says when she’s old enough to understand, she’ll make sure to tell her just how her sister and the deputies at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department helped save her life. “I’m going to let her know how much of a huge role her sister and her daddy and these officers played in it. She’s a very luck little girl and that she has God on her side all the way. There’s no words. I’m just so glad to have what I have.”
A tiny miracle surrounded on this day by her guardian angels in uniform. “I never realized how quickly something this quick could take a family member away. I’m so thankful just to sit here right now, talking to you, holding her. It’s just a true blessing,” said Meghan Beddingfield.
The Beddingfield’s live in the Virginia City area of Jackson County, an area served by the Jackson County’s Sheriff Department.
