Group supporting Widows on the Gulf Coast meets every month in Hurley

Widows Walk events are held every month at Sassy's restaurant in Hurley.

A group of ladies in Hurley, united by one thing, come together each month to support one another! Now, the groups numbers continue to grow and the community at large is showing its support as well.

Widows Walk is a monthly event held at Sassy’s restaurant in Hurley. The event started about a year ago in June 2023, with 50 attendees at the first meeting. Fast forward a year and the most recent meeting brought in about 170 attendees.

“After watching a dear friend go through the death of her husband, Sharla, the owner of Sassy’s, and I talked many times during that time about her being lost without her husband. We just felt like this group of ladies were just forgotten sometimes. We wanted to do something fun for them and a way for them to connect,” said Terese Emswiler.

“The way that it started was the Lord just put it on my heart to do something for ladies who have lost their husbands. I was like Lord; all I can do is cook and I have a restaurant to provide food,” said Sharla Holder.

“It makes your life a little better, you look forward to it. Coming to see them and getting involved in it, stated Audrey Fayeeuvanks. If you have to change a doctor’s appointment you do, so you don’t miss it.”

Since starting last year, Widows Walk has brought in attendees and volunteers from all over the Gulf Coast and has received help from the community as well.

“Community involvement has just been amazing. People ask us all the time “what can we do?” There are so many people who can’t come and help us, but they wanna do something. So, they give of their services, of their money,” said Emswiler

“People throughout the community have come to help because with all the ladies we have coming, of course it takes a lot to serve those ladies,” said Holder

Each event has its own particular theme, and the next one is coming up soon.

“I usually try to base it on whatever the month is, if it’s July we’ll do something patriotic, stated Tanya Cumbest. Our first one, which was in June, was a luau. We have a local caterer here and she contacted us and said “I wanna do a breakfast.” My first instinct was we’ll do another luau, but she said breakfast, I woke up one morning and I said, “Oh my God, we need to do Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” So, that’s our theme for this month.

The next Widows Walk will be held on June 18th at Sassy’s restaurant.
