Governor Signs Exec Order to Start Oyster Council on Coast

Monday, Governor Phil Bryant visited the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (M.D.M.R.) to sign an executive order starting an oyster council on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Bryant says he rarely signs executive orders, but feels the oyster industry never got running on full cylinders after Hurricane Katrina.

Jamie Miller, Executive Director of M.D.M.R., says, “Well oysters are extremely important to the seafood industry, but not just the industry, they provide a water quality benefit. So it’s habitat for other species that are found in the Mississippi Sound, it’s an economic benefit, and also serves as a huge environmental benefit. So it runs the gamut and its one of the greatest natural resources we have in Mississippi.”

Director Miller says this council could lead to more jobs and revenue for the Gulf Coast.
