Governor Reeves speaks on military spousal resources

Governor Tate Reeves hosted a round table this afternoon at the Great Southern Club.

The round table discussed the importance of the military, but mainly the resources needed for military spouses and family members.

With service members and their families often moving from base to base, it is difficult for spouses to find employment and a community.

Members of the panel gave their personal testimonies of what life was like trying to find work and provided ideas on ways Mississippi can try to decrease the unemployment rate of military spouses, which is almost 20 percent. Specialty Contractors President Dave Dennis said, “It’s a group that is together that Governor Reeves has put together to enhance the family, to enhance the experience of not only the soldiers, and sailors, and airman that are here, but certainly the families, because if the family is happy, if a family is able to engage, then certainly we’re going to have a more meaningful experience for them.”

Governor Reeves said, “It’s almost 20 percent because it takes them time to once they’ve moved to a new place to either go through the government bureaucracy or to find a job in what they’re skill in doing so we’re going to make it as easy as possible for those individuals when the move to Mississippi whether it’s here on the beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast or NAS Meridian, or the Air Force base in Columbus, or anywhere else, that they have the ability to be very hospitable to the families.”

At the end of the round table, Governor Tate Reeves signed a proclamation that promised to work towards breaking down barriers for military spouses and family members.
