Governor Reeves focusing on foster care system
Governor Tate Reeves is shining a light on the children in Mississippi’s foster care system.
Today, Governor Reeves announced the expansion of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption’s signature program, Wendy’s Wonderful Kids, which focuses on finding adoptive homes for children within the Mississippi foster care system.
The foundation is providing $1.7 million and their training and support program to the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services.
Over the years, Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program has found homes for thousands of children, including 125 in Mississippi.
Governor Reeves also signed House Bill 1313, which creates the ‘State Representative Bill Kinkade Fostering Access and Inspiring True Hope (FAITH) Scholarship Program.”
Reeves explains the significance of House Bill 1313 and what it means for the foster care system. “We have a duty and an obligation to insure those children growing up in foster care have the opportunity to turn their struggles into strengths. This is why I’m proud today to sign House Bill 1313 into law. This bill creates the State Representative Bill Kincade Fostering Access and Inspiring True Hope Scholarship Program, to provide $1 million for foster children in Mississippi to pursue a post-secondary education. This legislation gives a hand up to foster kids around our state and I am incredibly excited to see the impact it will have over time. I want us to do everything we can to support those kids in foster care, to facilitate the process of them finding loving families and homes, and give them the support they need to access wealth of opportunities.”
The bill is named after Representative Kinkade who is a former foster care child.
