Governor declares state of emergency as winter weather moves into state

Gov. Tate Reeves has declared a state of emergency as frigid temperatures, sleet and snow creep into the state.

On Sunday, Reeves posted the decree to his X account.

“I’ve declared a State of Emergency in anticipation of freezing temperatures and severe winter weather,” Reeves said on X. “This will allow us to mobilize state assets, and better support response and recovery efforts.

“Preparing before the storm arrives is vital. I urge all Mississippians to take the necessary steps to keep themselves and their families safe.”

The declaration was made as severe winter weather started to affect the northern part of the state with ice reported on roads and bridges in Coahoma, Lafayette, Panola and Quitman counties, according to the Department of Transportation.
