Governor Bryant announces first female Senator in Mississippi

We will soon have our first female senator in the state of Mississippi.
State Agriculture Commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith will take the seat. She is replacing veteran Senator Thad Cochran, who is retiring in April.
The announcement was made by Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant at the Military Memorial Museum in Brookhaven. Smith was appointed as commissioner of state agriculture in 2012. Not only will she be Mississippi’s first female senator, but also the sixth female Republican senator in history.
She plans to run for re-election for the remainder of Cochran’s term which runs out in 2020.
