Gone Fishin’: More than 100 seniors spend the day out in the sun
It has been a busy week for high school seniors with numerous graduations along the Coast, but senior citizens spent the day relaxing in Harrison County.
More than one hundred seniors spent the day relaxing, socializing, and catching some fish. Harrison County Supervisor Angel Middleton invited seniors to her family’s farm in Saucier for a day of fishing. “This gives our seniors a chance to get out, a lot of them haven’t fished in many years so they can come out and walk around. If they don’t want to fish they can sit up under the oak tree and enjoy the day.”
For many of the seniors, this day brought back many fond memories of their younger years. Participant Adam Deinet said, “I used to fish when I was in Tennessee. I used to fish in bass tournaments, a lot of good memories.”
Even people who have never fished before had the chance to cast a line because everything was provided for them, even the fishing poles. Participant Beverly Starita said, “A lot of people can’t get out and you know they go to the center every day and when we got an opportunity to get out it is enjoyable. It’s very nice.”
If you missed out on fishing, the senior centers in Harrison County will be hosting more free events. Harrison County Senior Resources Executive Director Eunice Hollingsworth said, “We want them to have some quality of life in their golden years and we are all about keeping them healthy, making sure they have exercise and socialization.”
